Along the Tuscan via Francigena in Lunigiana

DEPARTURE: 4 Days

THE JOURNEY

The region takes its name from Luni, the ancient Roman town that once flourished at the mouth of the Magra River. Lunigiana, the historic land surrounding the Magra Valley, lies at the crossroads of Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Liguria, a natural meeting point where cultures, dialects, and culinary traditions have blended for centuries. Here, the route follows ancient mule tracks and walking trails, passing from one small village to another through landscapes rich in history and character. Along the way, traces of a past far older than the medieval pilgrims of the Via Francigena emerge at every turn. The mysterious Statue Stele of Pontremoli tell the story of Copper Age peoples who inhabited these lands thousands of years ago. In Filetto, the walls still preserve the layout of an ancient Byzantine military settlement, while numerous castles scattered across the hills recall the strategic importance of this borderland, long considered the gateway to Italy from the north. Walking through olive groves, beneath magnificent chestnut trees, and among evergreen holm oaks with the sea visible in the distance, the history of Lunigiana gradually reveals itself. Each stage offers a journey through time, where nature, history, and tradition come together to create one of the most fascinating sections of the Via Francigena.

Notes

Food & Local Specialties: Discover the authentic flavours of Lunigiana, including traditional herb pies, Pontremoli testaroli, Aulla panigacci, sgabei, torta sema, farinata, and spongata. If you have never tasted them before, this journey offers the perfect opportunity for a memorable culinary experience.

Region, Society & Environment: The Via Francigena between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany has played an important role in revitalising the small communities of the Apennines. Following the opening of the A15 motorway in 1975, many towns experienced a decline in traffic and local economic activity. The growing number of pilgrims walking the Francigena has helped support guesthouses, B&Bs, local shops, and community initiatives. At the Pieve di Sorano, we encounter some of the most inspiring local projects and organisations that contribute to the vitality of this mountain region.

Difficulty Level: Moderate. The route follows hiking trails, gravel paths, mule tracks, short stretches of quiet paved roads, and cycle-pedestrian paths.

Departure: Meeting point at Pontremoli Railway Station at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Arrival: Arrival in Sarzana in the late morning. Departure planned during the early afternoon.

Guide: Roberta Ferraris, certified environmental hiking guide for the Piedmont Region. She is also the author of the official guidebook to the Via Francigena, published by Terre di Mezzo Editore.
