Portugal – Hiking the Rota Vicentina

A journey through sandy dunes, dramatic cliffs where storks nest, and the constant cries of seagulls echoing above the Atlantic Ocean.

Southern Portugal: the Algarve and Alentejo, a region stretching along the Atlantic coast for hundreds of kilometres. A corner of Europe waiting to be discovered, familiar yet wonderfully different. A place of silence and endless ocean views, of wild landscapes and timeless traditions, where ships still seem to sail fearlessly towards the distant horizon. Here, the Atlantic reveals all its power, with some of Europe's most celebrated surfing waves and some of the continent's most impressive tides. We walk immersed in the extraordinary light of one of Europe's most spectacular coastal landscapes, passing through solitary villages, following green river valleys, and resting in the shade of centuries-old trees. The network of trails known as the Rota Vicentina follows two main routes: one that runs almost continuously along dramatic cliffs overlooking the ocean, and another slightly further inland. At certain points the two paths merge, yet both remain closely connected to the Atlantic coastline. Many of these ancient trails were once travelled by pilgrims journeying from Cabo de São Vicente to Santiago de Compostela.

Notes

About the Rota Vicentina: The Baixo Alentejo region stretches along a beautiful section of Portugal's Atlantic coastline, where cliffs descend in places to sea level, creating sheltered bays with small fishing villages and sandy beaches. Vila Nova de Milfontes is one of these charming coastal settlements and, according to local tradition, even Hannibal is said to have found refuge on its shores. Throughout the journey, the landscape is a continuous succession of sand dunes, dramatic cliffs where storks nest, and the ever-present sound of seagulls. This coastline is also one of Europe's most important migratory bird routes, offering unforgettable wildlife encounters. Reaching Cabo de São Vicente, one of the westernmost points of Europe, is a truly emotional experience, making it difficult to leave behind the sound of the Atlantic Ocean.

Type of Journey: All hiking stages are classified as Easy to Moderate according to the Italian Alpine Club hiking scale. Daily walking times range from approximately 6 to 7 hours. Participants carry only a light daypack with the essentials for the day, while the main luggage is transferred between accommodations. The challenge of each stage lies primarily in its length rather than elevation gain.

Accommodation: Most nights are spent in small family-run hotels and guesthouses. In Lisbon, accommodation is provided in comfortable hotels strategically located near metro stations to facilitate airport transfers. Rooms are generally twin/double with private bathrooms.

Meals: Whenever possible, dinners will be arranged at the accommodation. Otherwise, the guide will recommend local restaurants according to participants' preferences and dietary requirements. Portugal still offers excellent food at very reasonable prices. For lunches during the trek, participants usually purchase what they prefer before departure, such as sandwiches, fresh fruit, dried fruit, or snacks.

Your Guide: Enrico is a highly experienced hiking guide with many years of leading groups. His deep knowledge of the region will help you better understand the landscapes, history, and culture encountered along the way. He will also coordinate the group and provide daily briefings about the following day's stage, remaining available at all times to assist participants.

Getting Around: This trekking journey consists of six stages along the Rota Vicentina. The routes are not particularly demanding, with moderate elevation changes and daily distances ranging from 12 to 20 km. Participants carry only a small daypack, while the rest of the luggage is transferred separately and will be waiting at the next accommodation each evening.

Participation Fee:

  • From €940.00 per person for groups of 10 participants
  • From €1,025.00 per person for groups of 8 to 9 participants
  • From €1,190.00 per person for groups of 6 to 7 participants

Single Room Supplement: €450.00, subject to availability.

Accommodation Type: Hotels, guesthouses, and apartments, in twin/double rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities.

Extra Costs: For lunches and dinners, allow approximately €20-25 per person per day.
